Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSGSU) consists of three faculties, two Institutes (that cater graduate level students), the State Conservatory, the Higher Vocational School and 19 Research and Implementation Centers. In addition, the university runs one museum which is Istanbul painting and sculpture museum and one art and culture center which is Tophane-i Amire.

Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University is located on the European side of Istanbul and with its various buildings scattered around the city covers an area of 43,463m2. The Rectorate, the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Architecture, the Institute of Social Sciences, the Institute of Science and Technology, the Research and Application Centers, the Auditorium and the Art Gallery are located in the main building of MSGSU in Fındıklı. The Faculty of Sciences and Letters is in Bomonti; the State Conservatory is in Akaretler; the Cinema-Television Center is in Balmumcu; the Department of Traditional Turkish Arts is in Salıpazarı; the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum is in Antrepo 5, Beyoğlu; the Architectural Restoration Program and the Clothing Production Technologies Program of the Vocational School are carried on in Bomonti as well. The Rectorate Research Center is in Gümüşdere, Kilyos. The Tophane-i Amire building named after its location is at Tophane.

All the buildings of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University are located close to the city center making it easily accessible by public transportation. Access is possible by municipal buses, boats, trams, underground and by taxi from the major junctures of land and sea transportation, namely from Karakoy, Eminönü, Beşiktaş and Taksim. By the way, all of these junctures are within walking distance from the main university building.

There are 6359 undergraduate and 2135 graduate students registered in our university as of 2014. Furthermore, there is a total of 162 students registered in the Higher Vocational School. Plus there are 588 academics along with 422 administrative staff working to create a better university environment for students. The aim of our university is not solely to educate and train scholars in arts and sciences but to promote projects that will help develop contemporary Turkish art and culture as well.

Faculty of Sciences and Letters

Department of Archeology

The Department of Archaeology was a part of the department of Archaeology and History of Art which was established in 1983. In 1999, it was separated and was established under the name of Department of Archaeology that was opened in 1999-2000. There are three divisions under the department which are Prehistorical Archaeology, Protohistorical Archaeology and Classical Archaeology. The curriculum is designed chronologically starting from the Prehistorical Period to the Late Roman Period. The graduates obtain the title of “archaeologist” and may work as curators or experts in the museums, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, art galleries, Municipalities and in the tourism sector as well. The department has its members involved in excavation and field survey projects such as Kolophon, Adramytteion, Pergamon, Aphrodisias, places in Thrace like Tekirdağ Ganos Mountains and Aşağı Pınar.

Department of Philosophy

Founded in 2006, the Philosophy Department offers undergraduate, MA and PhD level programs under three subheads: “Systematic Philosophy and Logic”, “History of Philosophy” and “History and Philosophy of Science”. The curriculum covers major epochs of the history of philosophy, logic, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, political philosophy, philosophy of history, aesthetics and philosophy of art. The study of Greek and Latin, together with at least one modern foreign language (English, French or German) is compulsory for all undergraduates.  Faculty members specialize in ancient philosophy, modern philosophy (17th to 19th centuries), aesthetics, mythology, philosophy of art, ethics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of history, political philosophy, philosophy of science, hermeneutics, phenomenology, existentialism, 20th-century philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of social sciences and metaphilosophy.

Department of Physics

The Department of Physics at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University currently consists of 8 faculty members, 3 postdoctoral research associates, 3 teaching assistants and 3 research assistants. The scientific activity in our department covers some of the most challenging contemporary problems in particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmology, string theory, accelerator physics and solid state physics. An energetic research environment is supported with weekly seminars, monthly informal workshops as well as collaborations on national and international scales with distinguished scientists from Turkey, USA, Russia, Germany, Japan and Korea. The department offers competitive MSc and PhD programs in Physics and encourages the students to take part in research activities in all stages.  Undergraduate courses are also offered for students of Arts, Sciences and Architecture in various levels.

Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics consists of the Statistical Theory and Applied Statistics Divisions.  Undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs are available. The department is composed of three professors, one associate professor, eight assistant professors and six research assistants. The undergraduate and graduate programs are designed to train solution-oriented and research-oriented individuals who are equipped with necessary skills to succeed in various fields. Elective courses are also offerred in areas in which students are interested such as finance, economics, actuarial, biostatistics, computer science, marketing, and career planning. These courses are especially for our undergraduate students. In the department, we always encourage students and faculty members to attend both national and international conferences, and training seminars are often conducted by experts in various fields at the department.

Department of Mathematics

The Mathematics Department offers education at the undergraduate and graduate level with a full-time academic staff of 25 people. The undergraduate program helps students attain knowledge of the fundamental concepts of comtemporary mathematics and an understanding of abstract mathematical thinking. Completing the program, students are expected to be able to apply their skills both in scientific research and business life. About a quarter of the course load consisting of elective courses, the program allows the student to focus on her or his areas of interest in the later years.  Students also have the option of enrolling in minor programs in cryptography and actuarial science.  On the graduate level, the department offers a variety of courses and possible research fields in pure mathematics.

Department of History of Art

The Department of Art History, established in 1983, has two divisions which are “Turkish-Islamic Arts” and “Western and Contemporary Arts”. Students who have successfully completed the four-year undergraduate program are qualified as art historians. Students graduating with a major in art history could work in museums as curators and researchers. They may also work as administrators, specialists, researchers or curators in institutions affiliated to Ministry of Culture and Tourism, or private art galleries. Students who have completed a teacher’s training program during or after their undergraduate years, may also be appointed to the position of teacher in primary and high schools. Graduates with satisfactory grades are eligible to apply for MA and Ph.D programs at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University or other universities.

Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University has been actively supporting an interdisciplinary teaching and research environment, since its establishment in 1984. Closely following contemporary theoretical debates and equally dedicated to applied research, the department is proud to be home to a rich curriculum, a multiplicity of projects and various events. This rich curriculum covers a range of compulsory and elective courses, more or less covering all the areas listed above, thanks to the variety of members’ research interests. In addition, courses on psychology, philosophy and logic are also provided for students aiming to complete a further degree in pedagogy. Last but not least, the department offers MA and PhD degrees, to postgraduate students enrolled to the “General Sociology and Methodology” program under the Institute of Social Sciences.

Department of History

The department was founded by Prof. Dr. Gülçin Çandarlıoğlu in 1986, and in 1989, it started to accept students for undergraduate and MA program. In the following years, PhD. program was also started to be offered. In the department, there are five subbranches. These are Ancient History Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern History and Turkish Republican History. The department aims to equip students with research skills and the ability to assess historical events drawing on primary sources and to provide them with tools and knowledge necessary to become a history teacher. Besides teaching undergraduate and graduate students, the department also contribute to Turkish culture with their publications.

Department of Turkish Language and Literature

The Department has programs of old Turkish, modern Turkish and Turkish literature. The courses offered in these programs have topics related to Turkish Literature, modern Turkish literature and folkloric literature. Most of the courses last for one semester. The students who complete their four-year education can be teachers in state or in private schools. Moreover, since the students are equipped with the knowledge and skills of Ottoman Turkish, they can work in museums and archives as experts or they can work in different institutions.

Department of Western Languages and Literature

Since its inception in 2012, the Department of Western Languages and Literatures intends to offer a BA program in English Language and Literature. The department aims to offer an array of introductory courses designed to provide an informed understanding of the diverse societies in which imaginative texts were produced by placing English Literature within the broader cultural context. The department also aims to adopt a comparative approach by embracing also American and European traditions of imaginative writing in English. Students graduated from the department can progress to language-based professions such as journalism, education and translation and to carrers in the arts, advertising and cultural management.

Department of Educational Sciences

The Department of Educational Sciences was founded in 1992 and reconstructed in 2010 to conduct “Pedagogical Formation Certificate Program” for students graduated from different fields of study, which are acknowledged as eligible fields to teacher assignment. The program is carried out every year with the permission of Higher Education Board. Mission of the department is to educate future teachers, who value democracy, productivity, creative thinking and diversity in a learning environment and who have professional sensitivity, research and critical thinking skills. The department consists of six faculty members, one research assistant and one expert. Since 2010-2011 academic year, approximately 1000 students attended to the Department’s “Pedagogical Formation Certificate Program”. Apart from this program the department offers elective courses to all faculties and departments of the university.

Faculty of Fine Arts

Department of Painting

The Department of Painting is one of the main three departments of "Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi", which was opened in 1883. It plays an important role in the development of Turkish Art as being the first department of its kind. The aim of art education in this department is to train intellectual, contemporary artists who can create original works on an international and universal level. In the department, the courses are taken place in painting studios, drawing studios, applied art studios (Engraving, Lithography, Serigraphy, Stained - Glass, Fresco, Tapestry) and also as theoretical courses are. Education has been carried on by outstanding teaching staff who are also very well-known artists in Turkey.

Department of Sculpture

Since 1883, with the foundation of “Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi”, the Department of Sculpture has been the unique place where the art of Sculpture is being continuously developed in Turkey in many ways. With a current staff of 19 academics, the department offers courses at undergraduate, graduate and doctorate level. At the former level, the department’s aim is to establish the base both theoretically and practically, which is necessary for the student of sculpture. At the graduate level, the student has the opportunity to specialize on a certain issue and gain experience in the chosen field. At the doctorate level, the department expects the students to establish an original artistic identity both in theory and in practice.

Department of Stage and Costume Design

The Department was founded in 1958 by Prof. Erdoğan AKSEL and Sadi ÖZİŞ, as “Theatre Stage and Costume Studio” under the department of Decorative Arts in Fine Arts Academy of Istanbul. Until 1983, it was just offering five years of undergraduate education. However, since then, the department has started to offer four years of undergraduate and two years of graduate and post-graduate education. The department as being the part of the Faculty of Fine Arts at University was restructured in 1996-97 including three main divisions: Stage Design, Costume Design Puppet and Shadow Play Design. The graduates of the department can work as stage and costume designers and art directors in theatres, cinema, media, advertisment sector and festivals. Theatre Stage and Costume Design Master Program is being offered since 1997.

Department of Photography

The Institute of Photography was founded in 1978. In 1994, it underwent a change in its structure and have been structured again under the department of photography, which consists of the division of photographic art and the branches of art photography, advertising photography and documentary photography. The department of photography builds up its educational program on creativity, technical competence and technological process; thus training artist candidates to a higher intellectual degree. Due to the strong relations and joint projects with the other related institutions in the industry, the department also actively keeps up with technology and make transformations in its educational structure. Photography artists graduated from the department can work in press, advertisement sector and fashion branches in Turkish photography or at universities. Their work is presented to public in national and international art platforms.

Department of Traditional Turkish Arts

The Department was opened in 1915 with the establishment of The School of Calligraphy Masters "Hattatlar Mektebi". Then, it became Oriental Decorative Arts School "Şark Tezyini Sanatlar Mektebi" and in 1936, it started to offer undergraduate education at the department of Fine Arts Academy. The department consists of five main art divisions such as Book-Binding, Tiles-Ceramics Design, Carpet-Kilim and Old Fabric Designs, Illumination-Miniature Design and Calligraphy Design. The purpose of the education at the department is to teach our traditional arts and their conservation and restoration methods by giving necessary principles and skills to students who will produce designs for the present-day demands in accordance with Turkish traditional values.

Department of Ceramics and Glass Design

The Department was founded by ceramics fine artist Ismail Hakkı Oygar who was sent abroad for ceramic education in the first years of the Republic and who was later invited home from Paris in 1930 to start working as an academic at the department of decoration at university. In 2004, the department was restructured and turned into the department of ceramic and glass design. The department’s aim is to raise students who can apply the skills they gain by scientific research techniques, including the processes of research, discovery, application, supervision and finalization in the fields of art and industry. Recently, the department has started a collaboration with Eczacıbaşı- Vitra Art Studio under the name of “MSGSU-VitrA Art Studio”. The studio is continuing its creative workshops, exhibitions and events under the roof of the department.

Department of Graphic Design

The Department of Graphic Design is a unit offering a four-year bachelor's degree education as well as postgraduate and profieciency in art programs. In all programs, studies are offered in a way aiming to add creative elements to the visual language of graphic design. Besides, practical courses such as computer, photography, illustration, typography, and theoritical ones such as art and design culture, design readings, and the history of graphic design are offered at the department to help students acquire skills and knowledge required to communicate with the modern structure of today's world. During the final term, our students prepare a diploma assignment in a subject parallel to one of the projects covered/studied throughout the previous five semesters. If the project is successfully presented to a jury consisting of members of staff, the student graduate from the department.

Department of Textile and Fashion Design

The Department of Textile and Fashion Design covers principles of three disciplines which are Weaving, Printing and Fashion Design. Its curriculum includes courses that feed and complete these three discipline groups in technical, cultural and artistic points and it includes also the sector probation periods. The objective of the department is to educate the designer nominee who knows the material and production tecniques very well and who will produce creative and unique works for textile and fashion industry. The students can graduate when their diploma project is realized under the consultancy of an instructor and evaluated as successful by a jury with regard to its originality, technical sufficiency and presentation aspects. The department also offers master and doctorate degrees.

Department of Basic Design

In 1997, with a common decision, the current department has been established as one of the main departments of Fine Arts Faculty. Basic Design course was restarted to be given in sense of a common discipline like it used to be in the past and brought together the different type of students from each department. Curriculum of the department offers students in the first year opportunities to observe nature, environment of daily life, objects and art works as a source and to interpret them in a systematic way of analysis and synthesis. The program also includes theoritical lessons and conferences about art concepts which support each other and this way bring the works into an original artistic point of view.

Department of Cinema and Television

Prof. Sami Şekeroğlu, the founder of the first private cinema club, the first film archive, and the first movie museum in our country has gratuitously transferred them to our University, and has founded the first Cinema-Television Institute (Turkish Film & TV Institute) which started the very first cinema education in Turkey in 1974.  The department continues its mission benefitting from all the resources such as archive, studio, and world class technological infrastructure and it is currently known as, the Prof. Sami Şekeroğlu Cinema-Television Center. In accordance with the principle, “Production within Education – Education within Production” students receive applied cinema education under the guidance of the teaching staff which also includes veteran directors of the Turkish Cinema. Graduates of the department take part in creative staff such as director, screenwriter, and cinematographer in the Turkish cinema, and gain great success at home and abroad.

Department of Conservation and Restoration of Artworks

The Department of Conservation and Restoration of Artworks was founded in 2010 by Prof. Süleyman A. Belen to increase conservation and restoration awareness through raising a body of experts needed for the field with the aid of scientific and applied methods/techniques. In 2012-2013 academic year, the department started its undergraduate education offering a program focusing on theoretical and applied knowledge and skills in conserving and making restoration of painting, sculpture, wood, paper and ceramic works.

Department of Architecture

The first institution offering architectural education in our country with its history dating back to 1883 is Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University’s Department of Architecture. It still offers architectural education within the context of the requirements of our time. The department aims to educate architects to be fully equipped with knowledge and skills based on scientific and technological improvement. The department, with its qualified academic staff, offers four years of undergraduate education followed by Master’s and PhD Education. The department of Architecture, being accredited for six years by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, MIAK, offers an academic and professional milieu that contributes to the academic development of the students with its research and application centers, technological laboratories, design studios, national and international workshops, Erasmus program opportunities, art and design exhibitions and scientific and professional meetings.

Department of City and Regional Planning

The Department was founded in 1982. The department both offers graduate and undergraduate education to raise future city planners. The courses revolve around universal theoriesin planning and specifically aim to equip students with necessary skills and knowledge to put these theories into practice in studios. It is for sure that the department presents recent developments in the field. As for graduate education, its main vision as it is in accordance with the university’s mission is to prepare young researchers in the field and contribute to scoiety’s development on a global scale.

Department of Industrial Design

Industrial Product Design Education in Turkey was initiated by Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 1971. Having improved its capacity of information development between practice and science by means of its education experience focused on research and in conformity with its mission, the department has assumed the responsibility of training qualified designers and instructors specialized in different industrial sectors. In the scientific and artistic setting which makes the original identity of the university, the main purpose of the department is to train industrial designers who have the capability of applying creative solutions in the field of product design.

Department of Interior Architecture

Having a past exceeding 130 years, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University’s accumulation of knowledge and special attention paid on professional education; Department of Interior Design is a degree program existing since 1925 in the Faculty of Architecture. Regarding interior design academic program, in which individual identification of each interior designer candidate is aimed, changes in architecture and design together with their reflections on interior design are being closely watched and the educational outline is updated accordingly. The outline comprises adoptation of new developments in material science; detail analysis and furniture design. The main goal is to equip the interior designer candidate with up-to-date requirements of the age. Education in this department includes lectures, workshops, projects, sketches, seminars, research tours and more.

State Conservatory

Department of Music

The Department of Music consists of Composition and Conducting, String Instruments, Woodwind and Percussion Instruments, Piano, Harp and Guitar Programs. The department also offers Master's and Proficiency in Arts degrees. It also conducts part-time music education in primary school level. State Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, Junior Symphony Orchestra and various chamber groups formed under the structure of the department and they regularly present concerts throughout the academic year - both inside and outside the institution. Apart from these activities, the department also invites distinguished musicians and academics throughout the country and the world and offers seminars and master classes in order to keep the highest level in artistic quality and education.

Department of Musicology

The Department of Musicology offers classes in General Musicology and Ethnomusicology (folk music and folklore research). The basic courses in the General Musicology Program aim at examining and comparing various cultures from Europe to Asia, from America to Africa on an equal basis, also on sociological, historical, philosophical and artistic/aesthetical point of view, while focusing (mainly) on Turkey. One of the major goals of the Department is also to enlighten the future of Turkey, in parallel with the political and social developments of our world today. The courses are backed up with seminars offered by leading academics and specialists. The department also offers Master’s and PhD programs in musicology.

Department of Performing Arts

The Department of Performing Arts is carrying out its educational ad cultural programs under three divisions of the department, which are Ballet, Theatre and Opera Programs. Completion of each division takes 4 year-long education apart from the program of Opera which requires a preparation program of 2 year-long to get students ready for the upcoming education. The department peforms the shows both in the city and even overseas. This way students get opportunities to present their work through these activities and contribute to the art in Turkey and the World. In addition, each division organizes seminars and workshops to bring acclaimed artists or performers to widen students’ vision as much as possible and help them equipped with a global sight in art.

Department of Information Technologies

Department of Informatics was established as a program in 1997 with the goals of spreding the usage of information technologies at the university and developing new and innovative uses of such tehnologies in art and design. Apart from other Informatics programs in Turkey, it mainly focuses on computer graphics. The department conducts both undergraduate and postgraduate educational programs. The courses offered in undergraduate education deal with the areas of Programming, Computer-Aided Design, Image Processing, 3D Modeling and Geographic Information Systems. The department also runs a a postgraduate program called Computer-Aided Art and Design run by the department. It is an interdisciplinary study program allowing students to develop expertise and do research in Computer-Aided Modeling, Multimedia, Animation and On-line Technologies. All the leading software in CAD, image processing, animation, illustration and web design is available for the use of students.

Institute of Science and Technology

The Institute of Science and Technology offers 20 different graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy and Proficiency in Art more than 120 years. The primary objective of the Institute is to train creative specialists and academics to make significant contributions to Turkey’s scientific, educational and industrial development and research.

Institute of Social Sciences

The Institute of Social Sciences is a critical component of postgraduate education at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. It was established in 1982 with a primary goal of assisting postgraduate and research programs to attain the highest international standards in social sciences. The Institute includes all the departments of Faculty of Fine Arts and State Conservatory as well as the departments of Faculty of Sciences and Letters other than Science. At present, it facilitates and coordinates postgraduate education and research activities in 72 postgraduate programs administered by 19 departments. One of the key roles of the Institute is to collaborate with other national and international universities. The Institute responds to the needs of qualified academic personnel of other Turkish universities by reserving spaces for their staff in its postgraduate programs. The Institute also supports and encourages student and staff exchange with European universities through Erasmus program.

School of Conservation and Restoration of Moveable Cultural Properties

The School of Conservation and Restoration of Moveable Cultural Properties was founded at the university. It is aimed to teach traditional methods as well as scientific techniques in order to support conservation and restoration treatment. Works are also in progress to build up the school’s instrumental background with advanced technological facilities.

Higher Vocational School

Architectural Restoration Program

The Architectural Restoration program mainly concentrates on the study of stone, wood, metal technologies, measured drawings, traditional civil and historic buildings through theoretical courses, workshops, tours in İstanbul and in other historical cities and summer schools. Furthermore, each student is expected to fulfill the obligation of having hands-on experience at least for 40 working days during or off school days. The students of program are using mainly the books of the central library within main campus, as well as the laboratories in their journey to become fully-equipped.

Clothing Production Technology Program

Clothing Production Technology Program is a two-year (4 semester) vocational education offering theoretical and practical vocational courses, general cultural courses and industrial training (40 working days). The aim of Clothing Production Technology Program is to train qualified professional staff which are equipped with the ability to plan and manage processes and produce products best way to meet the needs of the clothing production industry. Considering the rapid development of technology, some coursers like pattern making, technical drawing and production planning are supported with computers and related industrial computer programs. Clothing Production Technology Program graduates’ work area is quite spacious. They can work sector’s processes and departments of design, pattern producing, production planning, production, quality, merchandising and retailing.
